Armadillo beaten with broomstick
Naples, FL (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jan 18, 2007
County: Collier

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

The Conservancy of Southwest Florida is nursing an armadillo back to health after they say it was allegedly beaten with broomstick.

A volunteer says in mid-January she witnesses a restaurant cook in Naples violently beating the armadillo's skull.

She screamed for the man to stop – then immediately scooped up the animal and took it to the Conservancy's rehab center.

Workers are upset because the restaurant employee isn't facing charges from the sheriff's office or the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission because the armadillo isn't protected by animal abuse laws.

"It's an animal with feelings and no abuse should be allowed no matter what the species - whether people like them or not. Animal abuse should not be allowed," said Joanna Fitzgerald, Conservancy of Southwest Florida.

The armadillo has been recovering from his injuries since January 18th.

Volunteers tell us he's going to be ok.

The conservancy hopes this case educates the public that all animals do feel pain and suffer injuries like humans.
