Lakewood Police have ticketed the owner of a pit bull that they said attacked and killed one dog, severely injured another and then survived being shot twice in the head and stabbed.

The incident happened about 2 p.m. Feb 5 in the 1300 block of Allison Street. The attack began after a pit bull belonging to a resident at 1335 Allison broke through a fence and into the backyard at 1355 Allison, police spokesman Steve Davis said.

Despite the bullet and stab wounds, the pit bull was walking around when animal control officers arrived and took the dog to a veterinary clinic, Davis said.

"The pit bull is doing remarkably well for having sustained those type of injuries," Davis said.

The dog's fate remains in limbo. Davis said he understands that the pit bull owner has given the veterinarian permission to kill the animal.

Davis said that after investigating the incident, police found that there were six pit bulls living in the house at 1335 Allison, ranging in age from puppies to three adult dogs.

Two small children also were living in the house.

Police contacted Jefferson County Social Services, which conducted an inspection of the home, but did not remove the children.

Officers impounded the other pit bulls, Davis said. They also issued a summons to the dogs' owner, accusing him of having a dog at large, harboring a vicious animal, having more dogs than one residence is allowed, animal neglect and failure to provide proof of rabies shots.

"There could be additional charges if we feel they're appropriate," Davis said.

The name of the pit bull owner was not available Tuesday night.
