Lexington County Sheriff's Department deputies and Lexington County Animal Services officers issued eight tickets on Feb 6 to a 30-year-old woman who serves as caretaker of a home on Burton Gunter Road near Swansea.

Officers issued the tickets as part of an ongoing investigation concerning allegations that animals on the property are being mistreated.

Sheriff James R. Metts said they also served 30-year-old Yadira Cantreras Sanchez with legal papers concerning a rule to show cause hearing that Lexington County Magistrate William Shockley will hold at 11 a.m. on Friday.

During the hearing, Shockley will determine whether a court-ordered safety plan should be implemented to safeguard 75 animals that are kept at the home at 741 Burton Gunter Road.

The court hearing will be conducted at the magistrate's office at 500 Charlie Rast Road, Swansea.

Officers issued Sanchez one ticket for simple possession of marijuana, one ticket for failing to have a Lexington County zoning permit, one ticket for illegally storing solid waste and aluminum, one ticket for violating the Lexington County fire prevention ordinance, one ticket for building a structure without a Lexington County permit and three tickets for not having rabies vaccination tags on three dogs, Metts said.

Sanchez lives at the Burton Gunter Road home with Eduardo Suto Moreno, 29, who rents the property.

Police say Sanchez told deputies through a Sheriff's Department Spanish-language interpreter that Moreno currently is in Mexico, but Sanchez said that Moreno is expected to return to Lexington County by Friday.

At 10:06 a.m. on Tuesday, deputies executed a search warrant at the Burton Gunter Road property and found a small amount of marijuana at the home.

Deputies were accompanied by Lexington County Animal Services Director Joe G. Mergo, III, and a Lexington County Animal Services veterinarian.

Investigators say the county Animal Services veterinarian examined animals at the property and found that three out of eight horses had physical conditions that were of concern. However, the veterinarian determined that the physical conditions of the three horses did not pose an immediate danger to the animals, and the animals did not need to be taken into emergency custody.

At the request of the Sheriff's Department, officials from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and South Carolina chapter of The Humane Society and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents went to the Burton Gunter Road property to check for possible health, animal and criminal violations at the property.

Deputies say the officials did not find sufficient probable cause on Tuesday to proceed with additional violations against Sanchez concerning conditions at the property.

Moreno and Sanchez keep eight horses, four cows, four sheep, four goats, 49 roosters, five dogs and one peacock at the Burton Gunter Road property, Metts said.

A SLED agent did not find sufficient probable cause on Tuesday to pursue criminal charges that the roosters, who have spurs and are kept tethered to posts, are used for cockfighting.
