Lawrence Rotheform, 54, could face up to two years in jail and $5,000 in fines if convicted of poisoning an animal, attempting to kill an animal and animal cruelty, according to prosecutors.

The dog's owner noticed her Boxer vomiting and experiencing paralysis in its hind legs in late November and early December.

On Dec. 8, she contacted authorities to allege that she saw Rotheform, who had earlier complained about her dog's barking, throwing meatballs containing a blue substance on to her property, prosecutors said.

Later that month, the dog's owner twice discovered pieces of hot dogs with white or blue tablets in them on her property, according to the City Attorney's Office.

A toxicology report on the meatballs and hot dog pieces found traces of rat poison, aspirin and Lovastatin, a drug used to reduce cholesterol, prosecutors said.

A veterinary expert later confirmed to police that substances found in the meat would be harmful to an animal of that size if ingested, according to the City Attorney's Office.

A search warrant served at Rotheform's home on Jan 31, 2007 led to the confiscation of samples of rat poison, aspirin and the cholesterol drug, according to the City Attorney's Office.

He was subsequently arrested, and the results of the investigation forwarded to Deputy City Attorney Don Cocek with the Animal Protection Unit.

Case Updates

A North Hollywood man has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading no contest to misdemeanor animal cruelty and animal poisoning charges.

A Los Angeles city attorney spokesman says Lawrence Rothfork was upset at his neighbor's barking dog and poisoned the animal with meatballs and hot dogs laced with rat poison, aspirin and cholesterol medication.

The dog was treated by a veterinarian and did not die.

The neighbor told authorities she saw Rothfork throwing meatballs containing a blue substance onto her property. She said she later saw Rothfork throwing hot dogs laced with white or blue tablets.

Rothfork was arrested after a toxicology report showed traces of rat poison, aspirin and lovastatin, a medication used to lower cholesterol, in the food.

Lawrence Rotheform, 54, of North Hollywood pleaded no contest Wednesday to one count of animal cruelty and one count of animal poisoning, said city attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan.

The dog was treated by a veterinarian and did not die.

Rothfork was sentenced to six months in jail and 36 months probation, but the jail term will be suspended if he completes 60 days work for the state Department of Transportation and stays out of trouble.

Superior Court Judge Michael Latin also fined Rothfork $3,555 and ordered him to attend an animal cruelty counseling program.

After Rothfork's neighbor began to notice her dog becoming ill she told authorities she saw him throwing meatballs containing a blue substance onto her property. She said she later saw Rothfork, who had complained about the dog's barking, throwing hot dogs laced with white or blue tablets.

Rothfork was arrested Jan. 30 after a toxicology report showed traces of rat poison, aspirin and lovastatin, a medication used to lower bad cholesterol, in the food.
