A Burlington Township man was sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $780 for strangling his neighbor's dog in October 2005.

William L. Mathews, 35, first admitted to a neighbor that he had strangled the neighbor's dog after a feud among several neighbors erupted over the dogs.

Mathews told Lapeer Circuit Judge Nick O. Holowka that the strangling was a mistake and happened after he put a cord around the dog's neck to get the animal off his property.

Another neighbor who shot and killed a dog later told police Mathews had admitted to him that he strangled another of the dogs reported missing from the neighbor's home.
