Thugs hacked off a pet dog's leg and cut its throat after beating it to death during a brutal onslaught. The three-year-old boxer's mutilated corpse was discovered in a field close to Carnlough, Co Antrim, on Jan 29 night.
The USPCA animal welfare group warned that the heartless killers might strike again.
"There's a lot of pet owners in that village who will be very worried about their own animals and we can't give them any reassurance so people would need to come forward and start talking to us about who did this," a spokesman said.
A post mortem found that the animal had been bludgeoned to death then had its front leg cut off while large areas of flesh were missing from around the throat.
The representative said the USPCA could think of no reason for the attack. If you have information on this case, please contact: USPSCA 028 9081 4242
Case UpdatesThe devastated owner of a boxer dog which was beaten to death before being severely mutilated last night offered a cash reward for the successful prosecution of whoever killed the animal.
The remains of three-year-old Brannigan were discovered by a member of the public lying in a field on the edge of Carnlough on Monday evening - just over a week after he went missing.
A post mortem carried out on the animal yesterday afternoon showed he had been beaten to death. He was then stabbed and mutilated with a blade or sharp implement.
One of his front legs had been hacked off and last night remained undiscovered. A second leg was only partially attached to the body, while the flesh around the dog's throat was sliced away to reveal its spinal cord.
The injuries are so severe the USPCA, which has described the case as one of the worst examples of animal cruelty in Northern Ireland, has declined the release any photographs of its dismembered body as the images are considered too disturbing.
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph last night, Jodie Jones described her anger and shock.
"The people who did this are pure evil and it's scary to think that anyone is capable of doing this to a defenceless animal.
"I have a 10-year-old autistic son in the house and he's very upset. He keeps asking for Brannigan and we have told him that he was hit by a car. We just can't tell him the truth.
"I am willing to pay £500 to anyone who provides information which leads to the prosecution of the person or people who did this."
A PSNI spokesman confirmed detectives are investigating and called for anyone with information to ring 0845 600 8000, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or the USPCA on 028 9081 4242. | Source: Belfast Telegraph - Feb 1, 2007 Update posted on Feb 5, 2007 - 11:32PM |
