A brindle-colored, male pit bull was abandoned on Danville Road sometime in the night Jan 24, according to Police Chief Donald Briggs.
The dog was left muzzled and leashed to a telephone pole. A passing motorist spotted and picked up the animal around 10 p.m., brought it to a veterinary hospital, which sent the dog to the Brentwood police, who in turn sent the dog to the Kingston Police Department, Briggs said.
"The dog was outside there for quite some time," he said.
Temperatures were very low that night, around 4 degrees, and the dog had a touch of hypothermia and was shivering, according to the chief.
Briggs also said that the dog was obviously underfed, with ribs showing.
There are no leads as to who could have abandoned the dog, Briggs said.
"That's not what you do when you don't want a dog," Briggs said. He suggested that the owner could have brought the animal to the New Hampshire Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Stratham, or could have put an ad in the paper.
The Kingston animal control officer now has custody of the pit bull, Briggs said. He will be held for 10 days and then turned over to the N.H. SPCA.
Briggs said that the dog has been skittish since his rescue.
The SPCA will do a personality check on the dog to see if he can be put up for adoption, the chief said. References« NH State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Rockingham County, NH
