Two Piedmont residents face animal cruelty charges after a dead horse was found on their property, authorities said.

A criminal summons was issued for Larry Hank Casstevens and his mother, Doris Casstevens. They are charged with one count of cruelty to animals, according to law enforcement officials.

Investigators said a horse found on their property in Yadkin County was left to die, with no medical attention, over the weekend.

Authorities said they were working to seize additional horses from the property.

The sheriff investigation is still under way.
