The body of a dog was discovered with a rope twisted around its neck following a "premeditated callous act of cruelty", the RSPCA said today.

It is believed the male lurcher dog died after being tethered to a gate and deliberately abandoned in a field.

RSPCA inspector Phil Lewis said he recovered the dead dog from a field close to Four Crosses Primary School, in Llanymynech, Powys, Mid Wales.

Appealing for information about the incident, Mr Lewis said: "This dog was deliberately tied to this gate and I believe it would have been alive at the time.

"For someone to abandon the animal in this manner, knowing that the rural location would make the dog difficult to find is a premeditated callous act of cruelty.

"Tying animals - or tethering - is not against the law, but the RSPCA believes it is not a suitable way to manage an animal as it can lead to animals being badly hurt and, in the worst cases, dying.

"This is a worst case where an animal has died a tragic death, abandoned 100 yards away from the local vets.

"Abandoning an animal in a manner likely to cause suffering is a criminal offence and I would appeal to anyone with information to please get in contact with me."

He said he thought the dog, which was not neutered, was around five years old and had been dead for about 24 hours when it was found.
