The Kauai Humane Society is investigating a disturbing case of animal cruelty. The farm animals were beaten and stabbed to death.

Three adult sheep were found brutally killed on a Kauai farm. The Humane Society is calling it a disturbing act of violence against helpless animals.

There has been a string of livestock killings in the state, and other cases of animal cruelty. But the motive behind this latest incident appears to be much more sadistic.

Daryl Kaneshiro does what he does most mornings: check on his livestock. But on Jan 14, things were very different.

"What we found was one Mouflon ram and also two pregnant ewes on the ground dead,"

The sheep were not only dead, but also tortured.

"We found that several of them had some broken bones," said Kaneshiro.

This happened despite a "no trespassing" sign at the front gate. Kaneshiro found these sticks near where the sheep were killed. Besides broken bones, the dead animals had bruises and stab wounds several inches deep.

"To think you have people like this running around public on this island and on this county is disgusting," said Kaneshiro.

Sheep, by nature, are docile animals, more likely to run away than attack people. That's why their killings have outraged many on the island.

"It's rare," said Dr. Becky Rhoades, the executive director of the Kauai Humane Society. "We've never seen anything like this on Kauai with livestock on a field, just tortured and killed like this."

This is the latest in a recent string of animal cruelty cases on our islands: pet pigs slaughtered in their own backyards, and dogs starved to death. Kaneshiro and the Kauai Human Society hope the culprits are brought to justice before they do more harm.

"It shows the kind of violence some of these guys have in them," said Kaneshiro. "Whoever it is, I'm afraid this could even happen to someone else."

Police say there are no suspects at this time. A $5,000 reward has been issued for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the killings.
