Volunteers of the Star of the North Humane Society in Coleraine are now scrambling to rescue 27 cats that were found abandoned and neglected at a home in Pengilly.
Heathyr Lazo, SNHS board member, said that four of the 27 cats have already been adopted while about 10 more have been rescued and are waiting at the shelter for good homes.
With SNHS sitting at maximum feline capacity, the remaining 15-20 cats are being cared for at the Pengilly home by volunteers. As space opens up at the shelter, said Lazo, these remaining cats will be brought in until all 27 have been rescued.
"Some [of the cats] are quite thin, some are shy and some just need some attention," stated SNHS President Gail Anderson in a news release. "But one thing is clear...they all need new homes that will care for them as they deserve."
To encourage adoptions and make room for the cats, the shelter is offering a temporary reduction in the feline adoption fee. The first 27 cats adopted in 2007 will be adopted for $27 each -- one third of the usual adoption rate. This $27 fee includes up-to-date shots, including rabies, and a spay/neuter.
"This temporary lower adoption fee will not only help to place some very adoptable cats, but it will also give us the opportunity to help those waiting to be rescued," said SNHS board member Kim Olson in a news release. "We have every type of cat for every family. We have young kittens to adult cats, short and long haired in every color, and each one has been preparing to go home for good."
Anyone suspecting pet neglect, abuse or abandonment should contact their local law enforcement. References « More cases in Itasca County, MN
