Bobby Stapleton, 37, 2400 block of Rosewood Cove, was arrested last week and charged with 14 counts of second-degree animal cruelty.

Oakley said Stapleton's charges stem from him shooting a neighbor's dogs with BBs.

"She was playing with the dogs and found a BB hole in one of the dogs," he said.

The owner took the dogs -- both Collie mixes -- to a vet where they were X-rayed. The X-rays found that one dog had 11 BBs in him and the other dog had three.

"This hadn't been going on very long," he said. "The owner noticed that the dogs wouldn't go outside and were using the bathroom in the house."

When Oakley and a Henderson police officer confronted Stapleton, "he admitted to it and showed me how he did it," Oakley said.

There wasn't a feud between the neighbors, but Stapleton did offer one reason for shooting the dogs, Oakley said.

"He said the dogs shoved their noses under his fence," Oakley said.

The vet bills generated from treating the dogs are estimated at about $2,000.

"We're waiting on an estimate for the house," Oakley said, because the back of it was "riddled with BBs."

A court appearance for Stapleton has been scheduled for Jan. 24. Stapleton was scheduled to appear on Jan 9 but the court date was continued.
