A Wilmington woman and her 17-year-old son were arrested when authorities raided their home and found evidence of a cockfighting operation, including a dead, mutilated rooster, officials said.
The arrests occurred Jan 16 afternoon in the 1300 block of North Marine Avenue, according to Los Angeles Police Department Detective Susan Brumagin of the Animal Cruelty Task Force.
The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was arrested for "endangering the welfare of her children," police said.
The teen, whose name was withheld, was arrested on suspicion of a probation violation, possession of methamphetamine for sale, possession of stolen and loaded firearms and possession of fighting gamecocks, police said.
Authorities went to the location on a cockfighting investigation and saw several roosters, including one that had "boxing muffs" attached to it, indicating that it was being trained for cockfighting, police said.
Investigators served a search warrant and seized 16 fighting roosters, nine hens used to breed fighters, and one "mutilated dead rooster." Also seized were 44 grams of crystal methamphetamine, four stolen handguns and drug paraphernalia, police said.
