40 animals abandoned after tenant evicted
Winston-Salem, NC (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jan 17, 2007
County: Forsyth

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

Authorities are trying to figure out what to do with 40 animals -- some of them exotic -- left behind by a man evicted from a Winston-Salem house.

"We found a list inside the house from the owner that said, 'This is what is inside the house and please do what you can for the animals, I've been evicted,'" said Carla Johnson of Wildlife Rehab Inc.

Among the animals were two dogs, three cats, five ducks, 29 turtles and other animals, including some endangered species.

Janice Freeman of Animal Adoption & Rescue Foundation called it the "worst case of animal neglect" that she has seen.

The animals have been taken to a local veterinarian.

The case is under investigation.

If you'd like to adopt one of the animals, call 336-768-7387 or visit AARF.
