Maria Down said she let her six-year-old Bichon-Frise, Bailey, out for a run in the front yard around 9:45 a.m. on Jan. 3 before she joined him for a walk, only to find the tiny pooch suffering from a bullet wound to his chest when she came outside.
"He was bleeding and in distress," said the upset pet owner.
An emergency trip to the vet revealed a small bullet had punctured Bailey's right lung and lodged in his rib cage.
"He was in quite a bit of distress so they couldn't remove the bullet," she said.
"They're hoping his lung will repair and the prognosis is good that he'll be able to survive with it at this point.
"The vet will do a re-examination next week to see where it's at."
Down said she lives in a quiet cul-de-sac and didn't hear anything suspicious around the time of the shooting.
"I'm shocked and disgusted that someone would shoot at a small, 13-pound pet that's a part of our family," she said.
"I'd really like to know who did it and for them to take responsibility for this."
Details such as what kind of weapon was used in the incident are being withheld pending the outcome of a police investigation.
If anyone has any information about the incident, they can call Strathcona County RCMP.
