Dogs and puppies abandoned in home, 2 dead
Las Cruces, NM (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Dec 8, 2006
County: Dona Ana

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Luis Garcia

A 27-year-old man is wanted on allegations that he moved out of an East Mesa house, leaving behind several pets to starve to death, authorities reported.

Luis Garcia was charged with extreme cruelty to animals after Doņa Ana County animal control officers found two dead puppies, three emaciated puppies, a female dog tied up and a goat starving to death.

According to court documents, the female dog, which was also skin and bones, appeared to be the mother of the five puppies, which were about 4 weeks old.

The report states that officers were called on Dec. 8 to 5541 Isaacs Lane, where they found the animals.

A neighbor reported that Garcia had moved out two weeks earlier and left the animals behind.

Investigator Robyn Gojkovich said that Garcia was picked up in November on a traffic warrant, and because he was in the United States illegally, he was deported.

She said Garcia returned to Las Cruces and that is when he moved out because he owed the landlord money.

Officers reported there was no water or electricity at the abandoned home.

The report stated that the female dog, a pit bull cross, was about 20 pounds underweight and so dehydrated she was unable to produce milk for the puppies. She has since been euthanized.

The puppies should have weighed eight pounds, but measured just over two pounds each. During treatment a third puppy died, the report stated.

The two remaining puppies will be put up for adoption.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Garcia is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (505) 526-8000.
