Three people are behind bars after a drug bust led to animal abuse charges. Syracuse Police said they raided a house on Warner Street Jan 4 evening on suspicion of drug trafficking, and when they got to the basement of the house, they found five neglected puppies.

The puppies were in small wire cages with no food, water, or bedding. Police said the puppies were lying in their own urine and had visible sores and protruding ribs.

Rolon Javier, 34, and Blanca Rodriguez, 32, were charged with five counts of improper confinement of an animal, failure to provide sustenance to an animal, and other drug-related charges. Jose Rodriguez, 28, was also arrested in the drug bust, but he was not charged with animal abuse.
