Cat beaten in the head
Las Cruces, NM (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Dec 19, 2006
County: Dona Ana

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Steven Ortiz

A teenager was charged last week with extreme animal cruelty for torturing a cat, according to a police report.

Las Cruces police said that the father of Steven Ortiz, 18, of Las Cruces told officers his son was torturing the cat by covering the cat with a blanket, causing the cat to panic and try to get away. The incident occurred Dec. 19.

The father then noticed a head wound on the cat and saw that its nose was bleeding and one eye was closing.

The father, who told police his son has a mental disorder and a history of violence toward his family, rushed the cat to an animal clinic where he learned the cat had suffered blunt force trauma to the head.

Police said they believe Ortiz may have stuck the cat with a mini souvenir baseball bat.

Police reported the cat may die. If not, it will have to take medication for seizures and may be blind in one eye.

Ortiz was arrested and remained at the Doņa Ana County Detention Center Thursday on a $7,000 bond.
