Dog shot with .38
James Island, SC (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Dec 27, 2006
County: Charleston

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A James Island family wants to know who shot their hound dog, Elvis, and left him to die.

Pet Helpers feel the gunman is not only a threat to animals, but also a threat to the community.

Elvis is pretty sore, but he's going to survive. It's a miraculous prognosis considering all he's been through.

"Someone shot him with a .38 caliber gun right here on James Island and this woman found him lying in a pool of blood on her from porch," Lucy Spears, his owner, said.

The old dog wandered off on Christmas Eve and was missing until he was found bleeding to death almost a week later.

"While he was missing, I was worried that he may get hit by a car... he's going to be cold.... he's going to be hungry. It never occurred to me that it would be a gunshot," Spears said.

The Spears family thinks the shot was meant to kill.

His veterinarian says he could have been paralyzed, bled to death or had a collapsed lung. Luckily none of those ailments happened.

He's a sleepy dog, about 10 years old, with no front teeth. They say it's unlikely he would attack someone to provoke the shooting.

"He is not a vicious dog. He is terrified of loud noises… absolutely petrified," Spears said.

Elvis was found just a few miles from home. That was a little too close for the comfort of this family.

"I can't even imagine what else they would be willing to do," Spears said.

They say it's nothing but love and care for the old hound in the days to come.

Elvis was, shockingly, well enough to walk around the animal clinic on his own. But, the family's veterinarian says he's never seen a dog shot in the same area -- without that dog dying.

Pet Helpers and the SPCA have teamed up to offer a $1,000 dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooter.

Anyone with information on who shot Elvis is asked to contact the Charleston County Sherriff's Department at 202-1700 or Pet Helpers at 795-1110.
