20 cats, tortoises and fish abandoned
Hyde Park, NY (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Jul 31, 2006
County: Nassau

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: man

A Hyde Park man who moved out of state and allegedly abandoned more than 20 cats, tortoises and fish will go to court next month, the SPCA's Humane Law Enforcement division said.

The man faces 21 counts each of animal abandonment and failure to provide proper sustenance to animals, misdemeanors under the state's agriculture and markets law.

The Journal does not routinely print the names of those accused of misdemeanor crimes.

After receiving complaints from the man's Hyde Park neighbors in mid-August, Humane Law Enforcement officers executed a search warrant on his house and rescued the animals.

The man went to Hyde Park town court to answer the charges against him Tuesday. He's due back in court on Jan. 9.
