Hoarding - dead animals, one in freezer Bennington, VT (US)Incident Date: Saturday, Dec 9, 2006 County: Bennington
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Yolanda Beagle
A Bennington woman wants to get out of her home after authorities find trash and dead animals in the apartment upstairs.
The garbage and animal waste were found at a two-family house on Pleasant Street. Now police have launched an investigation into the woman who lived there.
Today we spoke with the woman who lives 'downstairs' from this apartment.
"I know from the smell of it. It must have been pretty disgusting up there," downstairs tenant Brandy Warren said.
As she put her son to bed she says she heard what sounded like rain coming from the next room.
"So I went in my bedroom and it sure enough was pouring out my ceiling...disgusting, smelly water. It smelled like urine to be honest with you," she recalled.
It turns out a pipe on the second floor burst causing a leak downstairs. When authorities went upstairs to check it out they made some disgusting discoveries.
"This is one of the worst. I've never seen an animal in the freezer before," building inspector Kevin Goodhue said.
A cat was frozen in a baggie in the freezer. Goodhue says that was in addition to finding piles and piles of trash and animal waste.
"The person who actually did the cleaning was in a full suit and rubber gloves," Goodhue said.
"This is the worst mess we've seen in 30 years. There was total neglect for the animals. The place was a disaster," landlord Peter Croff said.
The upstairs apartment has been cleaned, but Warren says it left a mess behind in her place. And even though her place has been sanitized, the stench left behind is a constant reminder of what's happened.
"I have three small children. I don't want them to come down with some disease because there was saturated water with urine and feces in it," Warren said.
The woman who lived upstairs is named Yolanda Beagle. No one seems to know where she is or how to contact her.
The Bennington Police Department is now investigating the case. They have an idea where Beagle is, but haven't located her to question her yet. References« VT State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Bennington County, VT
