A Florida Power and Light employee was checking meters when he arrived at a home in the 14700 block of Southwest 26th Street about 9:30 a.m. Nov. 27.

The home appeared to be abandoned, but he found three pit bulls in pens in the backyard. The dogs were underweight and no food or water was in their pens.

As he watched, two dogs got out of their pens and began to fight. They fought so aggressively that the meter reader could not separate them.

Finally he used pepper spray and was able to secure one to a fence on a lead while the other dog ran to the other end of the yard.

When police officers arrived, they discovered that the dogs had open wounds and scars on their faces and necks from previous fights. Their empty food bowls were dirty and the yard was strewn with feces.

While the officer waited for a Broward County Animal Control and Regulation officer, a man who owned two of the dogs and another man who owned the home and one dog arrived.

The Animal Control officer escorted the owners and the dogs to the dogs' veterinarian for treatment.

Three citations were issued to the homeowner for cruelty to animals, not registering the dogs and no proof of registration. An investigation continues.
