A brutal case of animal cruelty was discovered by the Birmingham Humane Society on Dec 10 in Bessemer. Bessemer police called to the scene of a deadly cockfight on 1617 Berkley Avenue.

Police say only a few people were gathered to watch the cock fight when they arrived on the scene. A greater Birmingham Humane Society employee was called to help gather the male roosters that were still alive. Cockfighting is a misdemeanor in Alabama. Police arrested Rogelio Martinez at the house.

It is not clear what will happen to the remaining birds who have survived.
