CONVICTED: Was justice served?

Please vote on whether or not you feel the sentence in this case was appropriate for the crime. (Be sure to read the entire case and sentencing before voting.)

weak sentence = one star
strong sentence = 5 stars

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Case Updates

At his formal sentencing, David Murphy's jail sentence was reduced from 2 years to just 1.5 years, so he will only have to serve a total of six month in prison. He's already served two months.

The Dog Poisoning fine still stands at $2,500, and he will still have to pay the victims $1,700 to replace the carpet the dogs got sick on, and time off from work to come to court.

He was also ordered to pay $1,400 to reimburse the Lab in Richmond that tested the meat for poisonous substances.

Murphy's lawyers told the Judge that he's been enrolled in a substance abuse program. The judge reportedly said he found that to be interesting, since Murphy testified under oath that he was not on drugs or alcohol.
Update posted on Aug 7, 2007 - 7:23AM
Murphy's formal sentencing has been postponed until August 3rd at 9am at the Westmoreland County courts building. He has also requested to appeal (for the 3rd time) so that will be heard during that court session as well.
Update posted on Jul 24, 2007 - 4:07PM
David Murphy was sentenced to a $2,500 fine on May 23rd for Offenses Involving Animals at the Westmoreland County Courthouse in Montross, VA. He was facing a maximum penalty of up to a year in jail. Murphy is serving 2 years on another charge (burning or destroying an occupied building), and he was taken to jail immediately after court last night.
