A Queens woman was arrested Dec 9 in connection with the slashing and monthlong isolation and starvation of her 2-year-old pet dog, a Siberian husky named Trinity, ASPCA officials said.
Animal control agents learned of Trinity on Oct. 27 when Marisol Zayas, 26, called them to come take the dog from her apartment on 27th Avenue in Long Island City, said Joseph Pentangelo of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
"When they got there, they saw this huge gash in Trinity's throat," said Pentangelo, an assistant director of the ASPCA's human law enforcement department. "The dog was in great pain."
The agency took the husky to its Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Veterinarians found that Trinity's nearly 10-inch-long neck wound had remained untreated for more than a month and that she was anemic because of severe blood loss, ASPCA officials said.
The dog, which also had been starved, is recovering from surgery and has regained more than 15 percent of her body weight. She soon will be evaluated for possible adoption, the officials said.
Zayas, who is unemployed, has not said how Trinity ended up with the gaping wound, Pentangelo said.
"But she's admitting that after the dog sustained this injury, she kept the dog isolated in her apartment, tied to a closet door," he said.
ASPCA agents interviewed Zayas a final time Saturday morning at the 114th Precinct before arresting her there at 9 a.m.
She was awaiting arraignment on a count of animal cruelty. If convicted of the misdemeanor, she faces up to a year in jail. Case UpdatesCourt contact information for this case is as follows:

After turning her dog over to animal care officials for treatment of a cut throat, an Astoria woman was reportedly charged with animal cruelty after investigators learned she had allegedly kept the animal chained to a door in her apartment.
Law enforcement officials stated that Marisol Zayas, 26, of 27th Avenue was arrested on Dec. 9 on charges of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals, which is classified as a misdemeanor.
According to the criminal complaint, Zayas brought her Siberian husky to the citys Animal Care and Control office on Oct. 26.
Officials with the agency reportedly discovered that the dog had a large laceration around its neck, and was underweight for its size, with major bones clearly visible through the skin.
It was noted by investigators that the dog was taken to Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in Manhattan for treatment of the wound and malnourishment. Reportedly, the canine is expected to make a full recovery.

Zayas was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Dec. 9, according to a spokesperson for Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown.
Judge Fernando Camacho released the suspect on her own recognizance and ordered that she return to court on Jan. 24, 2007.
If found guilty on the charge, Zayas may face up to one year in prison and/or a $1,000 fine, according to the spokesperson. | Source: Times Newsweekly - Dec 21, 2006 Update posted on Dec 22, 2006 - 1:18AM |
