Bobby the dog has a new home.
The dachshund-terrier mix, taken from his Derry owner in September after she was found guilty of animal cruelty, was recently adopted by the LaRoche family of Plaistow.
The LaRoches decided to adopt Bobby after reading about his plight in the Eagle-Tribune.
"If we can make his life happy for the last two or three years, we should really show him what a good home is," Pamela Simonds-LaRoche said. "He really deserves it. A new home for Christmas."
The LaRoche's 13-year-old daughter, Hannah, convinced her parents that the family had room for another pet. They already had a 4-year-old dachshund named Leibchen and a cat named Oreo.
"I always wanted another dog," Hannah said. "When I saw this one, I just knew."
When he was taken from his former owner, most of Bobby's fur had fallen out, his ears were infected, and his skin was dry and scaly. Derry Animal Control Officer Marlene Bishop suspects that the medical problems were the result of a simple flea infection that his owner had been treating holistically.
In September, a judge ruled that this approach to treating Bobby's condition amounted to negligence and ordered the dog taken away. The state took custody of Bobby in October, and the LaRoches took him home in mid-November after an intensive adoption process.
While Bobby's skin is still dry and irritated, most of Bobby's medical conditions have cleared up, Simonds-LaRoche said. His fur, most of which had fallen off, is growing back. His skin, once pink and scaly, is better. And his eyes, once black and hollow, have life again.
"He's very comfortable," Simonds-LaRoche said. "He fits right in." References« NH State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Rockingham County, NH
