Dog repeatedly kicked in head, body
Tuxedo, NY (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jul 21, 2006
County: Orange

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Efrain Torres, Jr.

Police say they found three freezer bags stuffed with marijuana in the car of a Westchester County man seen kicking his mastiff puppy beside Route 17A July 21 morning.

A passer-by called 911 about 9:20 a.m. after seeing Efrain Torres Jr. of Tuckahoe kicking his leashed dog in the head and body while parked near the entrance to the Renaissance Faire, Tuxedo police Sgt. Pat Welsh said. The 8-month-old Tibetan mastiff, Kona, was bleeding from the mouth when police arrived, Welsh said.

Officers found 1.7 pounds of marijuana and an illegal gravity knife in Torres' car.

Torres, 44, who told police he was on his way to Greenwood Lake when he stopped to discipline his dog, was charged with felony marijuana possession and misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and weapon possession. He was released after posting $7,500 cash bail.

The Warwick Valley Humane Society picked up Kona for an evaluation by a veterinarian. The dog will be held until the outcome of the animal cruelty case.
