The brutal treatment of a seven-month-old pit bull puppy has prompted a reward for the arrest of the perpetrator.
A Caldwell animal shelter is offering a $200 reward if anyone will identify who tossed out the puppy at a College Station area dump Dec 2 afternoon.
The dog had been kicked in the teeth, wrapped in barbed wire, and was clinging to life when it was found by a passerby. The puppy had to be put down yesterday when his kidneys failed.
If you have any information, you are asked to call the shelter at (832) 891-1447. If you have information on this case, please contact: (832) 891-1447
Case UpdatesThe Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for torturing and abandoning a 7-month-old pit bull in Burleson County, Texas earlier this month.
According to local authorities and news reports, a passerby found the 7-month-old brindle pit bull at a dump near Tunis, Texas on December 2. The dog, found with his legs bound by wire, also suffered from missing teeth, a broken leg, and cuts on his body. The puppy was later euthanized due to the extent of his injuries.
Authorities believe the puppy might have been used as bait by dogfighters. Dog fighting is a sadistic "contest" in which two dogs-specifically bred, conditioned and trained to fight-are placed in a pit to fight each other, for the spectators' gambling and entertainment.
Additional rewards offered in this case include $2,500 from United Animal Nations and $200 from Mr. K's Pet Shelter.

A national organization devoted to providing shelter and care to abandoned and abused animals has offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case of a severely abused pit bull found in a ditch in Burleson County.
The dog, named Survivor by its rescuers, was found clinging to life Dec. 2 with large lacerations on its legs; failed kidneys; missing teeth; a temperature described as startlingly low; and a broken leg. It was put to sleep a day later, after veterinarians concluded that it would not recover.
The owner of a Burleson County animal shelter found the dog and took it to a veterinarian's office. Volunteers for the shelter paid the dog's vet bills and offered $200 for information leading to an arrest. On Monday, the national organization United Animal Nations also donated money to the shelter to cover the veterinary expenses that were incurred.
The shelter owner who found the dog and the veterinarian who worked on it both said they suspected the young pit bull had been used in dog fighting.

Wilma Lord has dealt with countless abused and neglected dogs during the 15 years she has worked for animal shelters. The dog she saw Dec 2, however, was unlike anything she had ever encountered, she said.
Lord found an abused young pit bull lying in a ditch along F.M. 166 in Burleson County. The dog, which she later named "Survivor," was alive, but barely. It died a day later.
Now Lord's shelter, Mr. K's Pet Shelter, is offering a $200 reward for anyone who might know who is to blame for the abuse.
"It was horrifying to me even though I do animal rescue and have grown immune to this sort of thing," Lord said. "He had a tooth hanging out of his mouth. All of his bottom teeth were gone. He had big lacerations. To me, it looked like barbed wire had been wrapped around his legs. I found him right in front of the trash dump."
Lord took the dog to PetSmart in College Station, where veterinarian Pamela Cockrum attended to it - only to find more problems.
The dog's temperature was below 95 degrees, while a healthy dog's temperature is usually around 99 to 102.5. In addition, it had heartworm, lipworm, liver problems and its kidneys had failed. After one night of trying to save the dog, Cockrum recommended that the dog be euthanized.
"Things were going down instead of up," Cockrum said. "I rarely recommend that animals be euthanized, but this dog just had so much wrong with it. It was a really tough thing to have to do but he was just not improving, and I felt that at that point he was suffering."
The dog died Dec 3 afternoon, Cockrum said.
Lord said she believed the dog was raised to fight by its owner and was abandoned after it either lost a fight or was used as bait for other dogs because it was not aggressive enough.
Cockrum also said she suspected the dog was in a fight.
"It kind of had that look about it because he did have these big long open wounds that looked like lacerations that could have been caused by teeth," she said, "and he also had some puncture wounds that were on his body that could have been tooth holes."
Lord and volunteers from her shelter paid the veterinary expenses for the dog and are now seeking donations to help recover the costs, as well as money to help pay for the reward that has been offered.
Lord said she called the Burleson County Sheriff's Office but no arrests have been made. She said people can contact the shelter online at www.mrkspetshelter.org with any information.
"Whoever did this really needs some mental help," Lord said. "If they do it to a dog, they will do it to a kid. This shouldn't happen to any animal." | Source: The Eagle - Dec 5, 2006 Update posted on Dec 8, 2006 - 12:05PM |
