Deputies broke up a cockfighting match and arrested three people Dec 2 after being tipped off about the incident.

Officials were alerted at 9:50 p.m. that a cockfight was taking place in front of several spectators at a home in the 7800 block of Grape Street.

When they arrived, they found about 50 people watching the event, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Department.

Spectators ran from the scene, jumping over fences into neighboring properties, but deputies were able to grab and arrest Jorge Denis, 44, the homeowner; Jose Sanchez, 42, of Loma Linda; and Jose Gomez, 28, of Redlands.

Animal-control officials seized 27 live birds and six dead birds.

Investigators ask anyone with information on the fighting match or spectators to call the sheriff's Highland station at (909) 425-9793.
