In November, Maricopa County Sheriff's Department's Animal Cruelty investigators arrested and jailed 44-year-old John Granville, of Tonopah, on charges of animal neglect.
Sheriff's deputies said Granville told them he had owned several horses for a year and had provided hay and feed for them every morning. When they became "really skinny," though, Granville said he never called a vet out to examine the physical condition of his horses, according to deputies.
Investigators said the adult horses were hundreds of pounds underweight and were starving from lack of nutrition. A foal was found lacking the quantity and quality of milk necessary for adequate nutrition, investigators said.
Sheriff's animal cruelty investigators took the horses to the sheriff's department's Maricopa Animal Safe Hospice unit for care by inmates in the county jail. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
