8 week old puppy locked in hot car Fayetteville, NC (US)Incident Date: Friday, Aug 4, 2006 County: Cumberland
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: James Wright
Fayetteville firefighters had to break into a locked car in a public parking lot to rescue a puppy left in extreme heat. It happened about 5 p.m. Aug 4 at the Wal-Mart on Skibo Road, Commander Richard Bradshaw said.
The driver of the car, James Wright, 35, of the 700 block of North Street, was cited for animal cruelty.
Bradshaw said someone walking through the parking lot saw the puppy, about 8 weeks old, inside the car, panting and foaming at the mouth.
The windows of the car were partially open, Bradshaw said. Firefighters determined the temperature inside the car at the time was 118 degrees.
Bradshaw said the temperature outdoors was hovering around 100 degrees.
Firefighters managed to open a door, retrieved the puppy and gave it cold water.
"We tried to reassure him and calm him down and bring his heart rate down," Bradshaw said.
Wright said he went into the store to cash his paycheck and planned to be inside for just a short time.
"It wasn't like I meant to do it," he said.
Wright declined to answer more questions. References- Fayetteville Observer - Aug 5, 2006
