Animal cruelty
Largo, FL (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Jul 4, 2006
County: Monroe

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Zachary Goodyear

It quickly grew from an insult, to an aluminum baseball bat, to a shovel, to a car, and ended with one man in a hospital and another charged with attempted murder, officials said Thursday.

The episode, according to the Sheriff's Office, unfolded like this:

Two friends, Justin Luebking, 22, and Daniel Horrigan, 25, both of Largo, were leaving a party on Birch Drive before 7 p.m. July 4 when they encountered a man in the street.

The man asked Horrigan for his name and Horrigan, in turn, asked for the man's.

"Zachary Goodyear," the man answered, pulling out identification to prove it.

"I guess you're the Goodyear pimp," Horrigan said.

Goodyear, apparently offended, walked away, saying he was going to get a gun from his car.

The 21-year-old returned moments later with a bat.

Horrigan and Luebking ran, but Horrigan tripped and fell. Goodyear hit Horrigan in the head before he could get up.

Luebking tried to intervene and was struck across the left arm.

Luebking's brother saw the fight, grabbed a shovel and charged Goodyear.

Goodyear got in his car, a black Ford Mustang, and then tried to run over Horrigan before leaving.

Horrigan was taken to Largo Medical Center with a head injury and later released, sheriff's spokesman Mac McMullen said. Efforts to reach Horrigan or Luebking were unsuccessful.

On Wednesday, deputies found Goodyear and arrested him on charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery. He was being held Thursday in the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $70,000 bail.

County records show Goodyear has previously been arrested on charges of battery, marijuana possession and cruelty to animals.
