City Utilities of Springfield says it is conducting an investigation into the alleged killing of an animal at its electric service center on North Prince Lane.

A cat trapped in a dumpster was reportedly struck with objects by two linemen until it died.

The two are members of the IBEW Local 753, and the union's business manager Brad Stokes tells News 9 the two have apologized and were sent home today with pay, pending the outcome of a separate investigation by CU.

Stokes says this behavior was absolutely unacceptable to the IBEW and that members are held to a code of excellence.

The incident was reported by a fellow lineman.

In a statement faxed to News 9, City Utilities spokesman Ernest DeCamp said:

"City Utilities will not condone and will not tolerate animal cruelty of any kind. Two employees have been suspended, pending the results of the investigation."

Under Missouri law, the crime of torture or mutilation of an animal ranges from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class D felony, depending on the nature of the act.
