More than 70 animals were found in a Pueblo West single-wide mobile home on Nov 21. Many were suffering, some were dead. The owner faces dozens of charges, including animal neglect.

Dogs, cats, turtles, birds and more were found inside the home on S. Walton Drive. Some were dead when authorities arrived, others have died since. Many were moved to the Pueblo Animal Shelter, increasing the animal population there by about a third.

Authorities declared the mobile home unsafe for humans. Owner Nancy Walcott says she would have gotten rid of the dead animals if she'd known they were there. Walcott says she's autistic and developmentally disabled. She says she lost track of caring for the animals, because she's been spending time with her husband who is hospitalized.

Case Updates

There are new developments in a case involving more than 70 neglected animals in Pueblo County.

In November, Nancy Walcott, a Pueblo West woman, was accused of animal neglect. Wallcott is developmentally disabled. All of her small animals are misdemeanor neglect cases that the district attorney says might be rolled into a previous animal abuse case. Additionally, Walcott could be ordered not to own any animals and to get some help.

The animal shelter is adopting Walcott's animals out. Shelter officials say they agree with the district attorney's decision in that case, but note that her case is completely different from that of another person's.
