Animal cruelty, failure to contain sheep Sandgate, VT (US)Incident Date: Wednesday, Nov 15, 2006 County: Bennington
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: William J. Haggerty
A local man was arrested for alleged animal cruelty on Nov 15, after four of his sheep were found dead on West Sandgate Road.
William J. Haggerty, 46, was arrested, Vermont State Police said, because he did not have a fence to hold in his cattle and sheep. The animals, thus unhindered, were able to roam and graze freely. The sheep were hit by passing cars, and several other animals allegedly trespassed on the land of multiple neighbors. Police said Haggerty's negligence caused the death of the four animals.
According to police, the Haggerty has been asked to put up a fence along his property, by both police and the town, and other similar animal deaths have occurred prior to this incident. Allegedly, Haggerty has refused to put up a fence, leading to the arrest. References« VT State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Bennington County, VT
