A dead cat was found Oct. 13 by a 12-year-old boy on his way home from school. The boy made the grim discovery in his friend's yard at a townhouse complex near 71st Street and 38th Avenue. He then summoned the cat's owner, Jennifer Anderson, who lives in a neighbouring townhouse, said Grandysh, an animal protection officer with the Edmonton Humane Society.
Anderson turned the cat's body over to authorities the next day, along with a broken metal broom handle and broken bamboo fish net found at the scene.
Medical testing recently concluded the cat was killed by severe head trauma, likely from repeated strikes. Authorities believe the cat was beaten in the front courtyard before its body was dumped behind the townhouse. It's unlikely the cat was hit by a car, Grandysh said.
"There was white fur found in the front courtyard," she said. "Definitely, something happened to this cat."
Investigators have sent letters asking area residents for information about the cat's death, but that effort has failed to turn up any leads.
"It just sickens me to think that someone could actually do what they did to my cat," Anderson said. "I still don't know how I'm going to explain it to my 5-year-old daughter when she asks how it happened."
Case UpdatesTests show that a long-haired cat found dead last month outside a condominium complex was likely beaten to death, says the animal protection officer assigned to catch the cat's killer.
"We want to find out what happened to Spirit," special Const. Carly Grandysh said Monday. "I would like to see whoever did this to the kitty be held responsible and get the help they need."
Humane society officials are still seeking tips about four other dead cats found mutilated in the Dovercourt area between Aug. 8 and Sept. 13. The cats were found within an eight-block area, with the most recent found near 121st Avenue and 141st Street. Animal protection officers believe all are cases of animal abuse.
Anyone with information about any of the dead cats is asked to call the Edmonton Humane Society's animal protection department at 491-3517. | Source: Edmonton Journal - Nov 13, 2006 Update posted on Nov 16, 2006 - 1:36AM |
