Dog shot with .22
Prichard, AL (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Nov 15, 2006
County: Mobile

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A pet dog was shot in two legs. It's too soon to tell how long the pet dog's limp will last, but how it came to be will haunt the dog's owner for a long time.

"He said, 'Pow, pow,'" recounts Lauretta Campbell. The dog's owner is mimicking gun shots she heard. She later found out those shots targeted her family pet. One bullet went through the right front leg of the dog named "Crazy." Another bullet, a 22-caliber Campbell says, is still stuck in his left.

Prichard Police are investigating, but Campbell thinks it was probably a neighbor angry because the dog was in his yard. "I'm just, you know, stunned by it," said Campbell.

Authorities warn someone considering putting a pooch in their cross-hairs better know the law before they pull the trigger. "You can't just shoot a dog because it annoys you," says Elizabeth Flott with Mobile SPCA. "The only time you can shoot a dog is when your life is being threatened or someone else's life is being threatened," she explained.

While it looks like the two-year-old dog will come through, Campbell hopes justice will too. "I want him to pay for what he done," said Campbell.

So far, Prichard Police haven't been able to positively identify a suspect. If someone is arrested, a spokesperson says he or she will most likely face an animal cruelty charge.
