A 77-year-old woman got punched in the face for trying to protect her poodle from a beating Nov 8, authorities said, while her 59-year-old neighbor landed in jail for starting the fight.
The brawl took place at 11:30 p.m. in the gated country club community of Jonathan's Landing near Jupiter.
It all began when Mary Malooley was sitting in her house and noticed that her 7-year-old poodle, Gidget, had disappeared from the porch.
She went outside to look for Gidget and saw her Bay Street neighbor holding the 25-pound dog by the collar and beating her, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
When Malooley went to rescue Gidget, Jeanne Culbertson Miner, 59, released the dog and attacked her, the report said.
While recuperating at Jupiter Medical Center, Malooley told a deputy about being punched and of Miner stomping on her foot so hard one toe was dislocated and another fractured.
A little after midnight, the deputy went to Miner's house in the Baytowne subdivision, where Miner appeared to be intoxicated, the report stated.
She was charged with battery on a person 65 years of age or older, and was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail. Bond was set at $2,000, and she made bail later that evening. The sheriff's report didn't say why Miner went after the dog, and Malooley declined comment.
But Malooley's son-in-law, Michael, who didn't want to give out his last name, said Gidget behaved well enough to go with Malooley to work at her real estate company.
Michael also said Malooley needed surgery on her left foot, but Gidget was doing fine. Some neighbors along Bay Street said they were shocked.
"It's a quiet neighborhood," said Norman Hill, treasurer of Baytowne's homeowners association. "I haven't heard of anyone fighting before, and I've been here 20 years."
"Unbelievable," another homeowner said. "It sounds like trailer trash." Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
