Dog stabbed to death with sword
Murfreesboro, TN (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Sep 2, 2006
County: Rutherford

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Richard Miller

A Murfreesboro man was arrested Sept 2 and charged with animal cruelty for allegedly killing his dog with a sword.

Large amounts of the animal's blood covered the walls, floors and other surfaces of Richard Lee Miller's home when Murfreesboro police officers responded to his home at 12:12 p.m. Sept 2

Officers reported the "substantial" amount of blood was dry and appeared old.

Miller, 53, was charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, by Rutherford County Animal Control Officer Callum Hattingh.

Miller told officers his dog, Shelby, was struck by a vehicle in front of his home Aug. 31, according to the incident report, so he brought the dog into his home and "euthanized" her with the sword. The report did not say what type of dog it was.

Hattingh took photos at the scene and examined the remains of the dog, according to the report. The report doesn't indicate whether the dog's remains were still in the home.

Murfreesboro officers were dispatched to Miller's residence to perform a welfare check.

Miller was transported to the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center where he was released on $2,000 bond on Sept 2. He is scheduled for a hearing in General Sessions Court Nov. 21.
