Defendant/Suspect: Teresa M. Garza

Teresa Garza was convicted in Botetourt County General District Court on 23 August 2006 of one count of animal cruelty. She has appealed this conviction. She is accused of starving her dog.

When picked up by Animal Control the dog was unable to stand or move and maggots were covering it's rectal area. The dog's body temperature was 96 degrees and the veterinarian testified that she was literally drawing her last breaths when she was picked up. It took nine days of intensive treatment before the dog was able to stand on her own. She was also heartworm positive.

Garza was ordered to spend 15 days in jail and to not own or possess any other animals.  Garza appealed this case in Botentourt Circuit Court in Oct 2006, and was ordered to 6 months in jail with 5 months, 19 days suspended, as well as a $480 fine and resitution.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
