Dog stabbed in the neck during domestic dispute
Salt Lake City, UT (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Nov 9, 2006
County: Salt Lake

Charges: Felony Non-CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Henry L. Jackson

A man wanted in connection with an attack on his ex-girlfriend, her son and their dog didn't put up a fight when he was arrested on the afternoon of Nov 10.

Throughout the night on Nov 9 and most of the day Nov 10, detectives were tracking the whereabouts of Henry L. Jackson, a convicted felon who was on his way out of the state.

Just before 5 p.m., police received a tip that Jackson would be arriving at a home in North Salt Lake, where he intended to hitch a ride to Wendover. When detectives arrived at the home, 425 E. Orchard Blvd., the homeowner allowed them to wait inside until Jackson got there.

"He was dropped off and entered the home and was taken into custody without incident," said South Salt Lake police captain Tracy Tingey.

Because of his "errant behavior," Tingey said, Jackson, 52, appeared to be high on drugs. He was treated at the scene and found to have taken a significant amount of an unknown narcotic.

"There was a concern he was trying to overdose on narcotics," Tingey said.

Jackson was taken to the South Salt Lake Police Department to be questioned but was in no shape to be answering questions, Tingey said, so he was booked into the adult detention center until he can complete the interview process.

Tingey said Jackson is being investigated on attempted criminal homicide, animal cruelty, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person and leaving the scene of an injury accident.

The intended charges, police say, stem from an incident Nov 9 in which Jackson allegedly got into an argument with his his ex-girlfriend at her apartment, near 450 East and 3500 South. Police said the argument became physical and Jackson punched the woman and later ran over her foot with his car.

The woman's 18-year-old son tried to intervene and ended up being stabbed multiple times with a butcher knife that Jackson reportedly had in his vehicle at the time. The family dog also got involved and was stabbed in the neck.

Jackson was last seen speeding off after neighbors of his ex-girlfriend called police.

The woman was treated in the hospital for her injuries and released. Her son, Tingey said, remains in the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery. The dog's condition is unknown but family told KSL-TV it was released from an animal hospital and is expected to be all right.

In 1982, Jackson pleaded guilty to second-degree felony manslaughter charges. He was recently released from prison.
