Dog starved, resulting in death
Bronx, NY (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Aug 9, 2006
County: Bronx

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: Janet Torres

A Bronx woman was under arrest on Sept 6, charged with starving her 5-year-old dachshund - leaving the little dog in a bathroom with no food except some maggot-ridden rice. Despite several operations, blood transfusions and emergency care at the ASPCA hospital, the dog, named Brownie, died.

Janet Torres, 43, was arrested outside her Westchester Ave. apartment late Sept 9 by ASPCA Special Agent Adam Gankiewicz and charged with animal cruelty.

Brownie weighed only 6 pounds when agents found him Aug. 9. He should have weighed at least 20 pounds.

"Neglect of this magnitude takes weeks if not months to rise to this stage," said Joseph Pentangelo, ASPCA assistant director.

Agents went to Torres' apartment after an anonymous tip.

"Without significant medical intervention, Brownie would have died in that bathroom," Pentangelo said.

Torres told agents she had been in jail for 30 days when in fact she had been there only a few days.

If convicted, she could face up to a year behind bars.

Pentangelo urged anyone who suspects animal cruelty to call the ASPCA's toll-free hotline, (877) THE-ASPCA. All calls will be kept confidential.
