East Hampton, NY (US)

County: Suffolk

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Two rewards are being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person who killed a cat by weighing down its carrier with rocks and throwing it in an East Hampton pond.

The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is offering a $1,000 reward for information that results in the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, a not-for-profit animal adoption center, is offering a $500 reward.

"We're very alarmed by this," said ARF executive director Sara Davison.

A necropsy determined that the cat had a broken leg and broken ribs and died either from its injuries or from drowning, said SPCA Chief Roy Gross.

"This was a planned act of animal cruelty," Gross said.

Felony animal abuse carries a 2-year jail term and/or a fine up to $5,000. The county agency and the East Hampton Village Police Department are conducting a joint investigation.

Police Chief Gerard Larsen said he hadn't seen a case of animal cruelty like this in his 22 years with the department.

Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk SPCA at 631-382-7722 or the police department at 631-324-1026.
