Guy S. Richardson, 54, of Beaufort, was arrested Friday and charged with 17 counts of ill treatment of animals and 14 counts of abandonment of animals for abandoning his cows and goats on property next to Riley Road in Burton, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

A neighbor reported that three cows were dead in a fenced pasture next to Riley Road on Monday, the report states. The neighbor also said the rest of the cows didn't look like they were getting any food.

An animal control officer went out to the field and saw the three dead cows as well as six cows still alive and eight goats. Two bales of hay were brought to the animals, which all looked emaciated, according to the report.

The officer took photographs of the animals, made arrangements to meet with a veterinarian to examine the animals and left contact information for Animal Control, the report states.

The next day, the officer and another deputy walked around the pasture and found several jaw and leg bones, according to the report. The officer fed the animals, put a red dog cable on the gate and put a bale of hay in front of the gate in order to tell if anyone had gone into the pasture.

For the next two days, the officer was not contacted by the owner, according to the report. On Thursday, the officer went to the Beaufort County Assessors Office to determine who owned the land.

According to the report, the owner was listed as Harold Trask and the officer discovered that Richardson had kept livestock on the property.

Friday, the officer went to Richardson's house to ask about the animals. Richardson told the officer he owned some cows and that he took food to them every other day, according to the report.

Richardson said he had eight cows and that they had a source of fresh water in the middle of the field, according to the report. The officer realized that the suspect was the owner of the animals and placed him under arrest, the report states.
