Puppy locked in car trunk
Syracuse, NY (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Sep 12, 2006
County: Onondaga

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Darnell Williams, Jr.

Syracuse police Officer Marcullus Roundtree was ticketing a green Buick Regal about 9:15 p.m. Sept 12 on Helen Street when he heard what he thought was a faint voice coming from the trunk.

Roundtree tapped on the trunk and the noise got louder, Roundtree wrote in his report. Roundtree found an unlocked car door and popped the trunk, he wrote. Inside, he found a pit bull puppy about 2 months old.

The dog had no food or water and the trunk smelled of urine and feces, Roundtree wrote. After removing the dog and getting it some water, Roundtree canvassed the neighborhood looking for the owner, using a driver's license he found in the car.

Darnell Williams Jr., 21, of 304 Cramer Ave., was found at a Helen Street address, Roundtree wrote. Williams said he put the puppy in the trunk because it had fleas, according to police reports.

The dog was taken as evidence and is being cared for by the SPCA. Williams was given a ticket for carrying an animal in a cruel manner, a violation of state Agriculture and Market Law.
